If you are in debt and unable to pay your creditors you can apply for a bankruptcy order or indeed your creditor can apply for one. Once a bankruptcy order is made, you no longer need to deal with your creditors, because an official receiver will be appointed. Once bankrupt you may find it difficult to obtain credit, and in some cases it may hinder your chances of employment.
